Light-Environment Research
With the Binhai Innovation Team for Green Buildings and Renewable Energy Utilisation at Qingdao University of Technology — the “a method and system for adjusting the light environment of a dwelling according to spatiotemporal behaviour”.
The same luminaire should behave differently at different times and for different activities. This work, carried out with the Binhai Innovation Team for Green Buildings and Renewable Energy Utilisation at Qingdao University of Technology, examines how indoor light environments affect work efficiency and fatigue recovery, and produced a patented method and system for adjusting the light environment of a dwelling according to spatiotemporal behaviour.
Method
The question is a concrete one: the same person, in the same room, needs different light depending on what they are doing and when it is.
The industry describes a luminaire with illuminance, colour temperature and colour rendering, but those numbers cannot answer “does it tire you after hours” or “does morning need the same light as night”. So the work does not measure the light alone. It enters from three sides at once: what light does to people, how people respond measurably, and what people themselves judge.
Psychological and physiological effects
How light acts on psychological state and physiological rhythm — the layer most often left out of lighting design.
EEG measurement
Using brainwaves as an objective measure turns “it feels comfortable” into a readable signal.
Subjective experience
The occupant's own experience is part of the evaluation, cross-checked against the objective measures.
The three converge on one measure: work efficiency and fatigue recovery. That is what separates this work from ordinary lighting assessment — a luminaire is not good because it looks refined, but because of what it does to the people under it.
The patented outcome
The outcome is a patented method and system for adjusting the light environment of a dwelling according to spatiotemporal behaviour. It folds “what time is it, what is the person doing, how much light is needed” into the lighting decision instead of applying fixed parameters per room type. It connects directly to the existing SUFN OS smart system, which executes it without the user adjusting room by room.
